Libya, Politics, 5/30/2002
A high ranking American official in Washington announced on Tuesday evening that the Libyan government proposed to pay USD 2.7 billion as a compensation for the families of the Lockerbie incident victims.
The said official who asked not to be identified said that Libya proposed this offer to the families of the victims through its lawyer and the families have to decide if they want to accept the Libyan sum or not.
He explained that paying the said sum will be made in stages to be extended over a period of time that is synchronized with lifting certain sanctions imposed on Libya. He added that Washington, undoubtedly, will not take any position concerning this offer which was negotiated upon without the participation of the government, but Washington will not be linked to any special agreement.
The US official said that the issue of compensation will be decided only by the families in that they discuss it with the Libyans, while the sanctions fall under the authority of the government.
In its issue published on May 6th, the US "Time" magazine said that Libya expressed its readiness to pay financial compensations for the families of the victims of the US Pan American plane which blew up over the Scottish town of Lockerbie.
