Morocco, Politics, 5/29/2002

Morocco has started preparations for the local and legislative elections, to be held next September.

On Tuesday, the interior department launched a communication campaign, dubbed "Elections 2002," under the generic motto of transparency and credibility in line with the will expressed by King Mohammed VI "to endeavour for the honesty of elections as a major path to a credible legislative institution."

The campaign, entrusted to two communication agencies, will target, among others, the generalization of the National ID card, the exceptional revision of electoral rolls and the mobilization of the electorate for a larger participation.

The campaign will start on Tuesday evening in national press.

The drive is meant to do away with conventional communication means, interior minister, Driss Jettou said at a meeting with Moroccan and foreign media representatives.

The minister voiced the authorities concern to secure all "legal, judiciary and administrative guarantees" for the success of the polls. He voiced the constant mobilization of the territorial administration to work in a spirit of neutrality and without siding with any party.
