Moroccan secretary of state represents king Mohammed in Comoro union's president swearing-in
Morocco-Comoros, Politics, 5/29/2002

Secretary of state for foreign affairs and cooperation, Taib Fassi Fihri, represented Morocco's King Mohammed VI in the official ceremonies marking the inauguration of Assoumani Azali as the first president of the Comoro Union.

The election of president Azali crowns a two-year reconciliation process following the Anjouan Island secessionist attempts. The process was made possible after the former "Islamic federal republic of the Comoros," now called Union of Comoros, operated deep changes in its institutions. The three major islands of the Indian Ocean nation was given each greater control over its affairs and elected its own president, while voters from all three elected a national president.

The Moroccan official was also received by president Azaali to whom he extended the king's congratulations. The two men also voiced satisfaction at the privileged friendship and cooperation relations between the two countries and stressed will to further develop them.

The Moroccan official signed with the authorities a convention under which Morocco contributes to the financing of four economic and social projects in the three islands.
