No US details to Syria, Lebanon on the new US peace conference
Regional-USA, Politics, 5/29/2002

Well-informed diplomatic sources in Beirut have denied Syria and Lebanon to have had been informed from the US about any details concerning the new international conference for peace in the region despite the fact that information and news reports said that the existence of the Syrian deputy foreign minister Walid al-Muaallim in Washington was an opportunity for Syrian- American consultations on conditions to convene the conference.

The Lebanese daily al-Mustaqbal (the future) issued on Tuesday quoted these sources as saying that the decision which was kept in secret and which was taken by the first meeting of the Arab peace initiative aimed at not disclosing the Arab papers the ideas and thoughts under preparations that are to be the base for an international conference -- are not open for the Arabs.

The paper's news report confirm that the weeks to come until next July will crystallize the idea of the conference in light of the contacts taking place between the four- member group (the EU, The US, UN, and Russia) and the sides concerned.
