Anwar al-Sadat photo results in firing paper's chief editor
Egypt, Politics, 5/28/2002
Egyptian parliamentary sources said that the chief editor of al-Meedan independent daily was fired because he published a photo for the corpse of the former Egyptian President Anwar al-Sadat at the morgue after his assassination in October 1981.
The chairman of the Egyptian Shoura Council, who is the chairman of the press higher council ( a governmental commission) Mustafa Kamal Helmi on Monday ( during the day's session received a message from al-Medaan's editing board chairman Mahmoud al-Shennawi , informing him he had issued a decision firing the paper's chief editor Saeed Abdul Khaleq from his job because of the picture he published on Monday of the late Egyptian President Anwar al-Sadat.
He considered publication of this photo as a "violation of public norms and values" and is "a defaming to one of the symbols of national work." Al-Shennawi for his part said "I am working to appoint another chief editor for the paper." He continued "This decision was taken on the ground of my respect and appreciation to the late president and his achievements especially the 'great decision of crossing Barlieve line' in the 1973 October war against Israel."
The paper had published on its front page and without any comment a picture, not published before, of President al-Sadat immediately after his assassination. Al-Sadat appears in the picture stretched on the bed in the morgue. His body is covered by blood and traces of bullets in his stomach.
