Jordanian figures appeal for release of Toujan al-Faisal
Jordan, Politics, 5/28/2002

Several Jordanian figures have sent a message to the Jordanian king Abdullah in which they called on him to take necessary measures to release former Jordanian member of parliament Toujan al-Faisal.

The signatories of the message sent to the King said that the decision taken by the Jordanian state security court to imprison al-Faisal for one and a half years "was based on a provisional law which violates the constitution in spirit and content." They indicated that this sentence has "damaged Jordan's reputation as the whole matter concentrates on a message she submitted to your majesty and thereby she was practicing a right guaranteed for every Jordanian under the constitution."

The message accused the prime minister Ali Abu al-Ragheb of "creating this problem and magnifying it as well as violating all norms even in regard to the state security court itself when he ( Abu al-Ragheb ) refused to be present before the court. He caused damage to Jordan's reputation and in hurting the feelings of the Jordanians who were brought up in Jordan on norms governed by tolerance and respect for women."

The message called on the King to "close this black page of the political history of Jordan by taking measures that bring back freedom to Toujan al-Faisal."

The message was signed by 165 Jordanian figures including former minister Hani al-Khasawenah, Leith Shbeilat, Abdul Latif Arabeyat, Zeid al-Rawabedah and many others.
