Egypt to undergo an administrative revolution in public services
Egypt, Economics, 5/27/2002

Egyptian Prime Minister Atef Ebeid yesterday opened a one-day symposium on improving public services.

The ministers of finance, transport, public enterprise, and administrative development all attended the event, which was organized by the Administrative Monitoring Agency (AMA) whose role in facing any kind of shortcomings committed by the state civil servants was praised by the Prime Minister.

The symposium coincides with the AMA's 20th anniversary of monitoring and protecting public property and positively contributing to economic reforms, AMA chairman Hitler Tantawi said.

He added that the symposium aimed to coordinate executive and monitoring authorities, which are the two sides of the coin of the state's administrative work.

The symposium reviewed the policies of various ministries and familiarized the monitoring authorities with the problems they face in the development process.

Tantawi said that Egypt is currently undergoing political and economic changes that competent authorities have to redetermine their targets.

"Despite difficult circumstances the Egyptian government is exerting great efforts to overcome obstacles and deal with internal and external challenges," he added.

He said the government had announced an administrative revolution to get rid of bureaucracy and alleviate the burdens of red tape.
