Canadian FM: we look forward to Egypt's significant role in the peace process
Egypt-Canada, Politics, 5/25/2002
Canadian Foreign Minister Bill Graham will start his visit to Egypt today, where he'll be received by President Hosni Mubarak to discuss the critical situation in the Middle East, especially after the recent Israeli incursion on the West Bank, the siege of President Yasser Arafat in his compound in Ramallah, and the deteriorating conditions of the Palestinian people.
The Canadian top diplomat will also have talks with Foreign Minister Ahmed Maher and Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa before proceeding to the West Bank to have talks with Palestinian President Yasser Arafat, then to Israel to have talks with Prime Minister Ariel Sharon.
Graham represents a true expression of the Canadian foreign policy that believes in the Palestinian People's right to create an independent state, and does not recognize Israel's control over East Jerusalem.
He therefore is the subject of attacks of the Jewish lobby in Canada, especially after he accused Israel of killing the Palestinian citizens.
In exclusive remarks to "Al Ahram'' Graham said that Egypt plays an important role in the peace process, being the first Arab state to sign a peace agreement with Israel.
He said that he would express to President Mubarak the need to push the peace process forward, and to spread out stability in the region, by taking advantage of Egypt's weight.
He pointed out that there is a great necessity to put an end to violence in the Middle East.
The Canadian foreign policy believes that it is essential to find a just solution to the issue of Palestinian refugees, as outlined in UNSC resolution 242, and as agreed upon in Madrid Conference in 1991.
