35 years of the life of The Organization of African Unity (OAU)

The Organization of African Unity was established on May 25, 1963. According to the organization's charter, it aims at promoting African Unity and integrity and enhancing cooperation among nations of Africa, in order to achieve a better life for its peoples.
In the first Conference of the Heads of State and Government of the OAU members states, held in Cairo during the period July 17-21, 1964, under the chairmanship of late President Gamal Abd-El Nasser, Addis Ababa, capital of Ethiopia was selected as the domicile of the OAU permanent headquarters.
Initially, OAU was composed of 32 African states, including Egypt. Other states which later gained their independence followed suit, thus bringing the current total membership so far to 53 states. The latest incomes to OAU are Ereteria (May 25, 1993)and Republic of South Africa (June 1994).
Egypt and OAU
As a co- founder of OAU, Egypt has been actively engaged in building this great pan -African organization. This emanates from a firm belief that Africa, with the strategic depth it represents for Egypt as well as the organic bonds of common history, civilization and destiny, poses as a key area for Egyptian foreign policy and activity.
Over the years, Egypt has been always seeking to achieve interaction in all spheres countries of the African Continent, rally international support to African causes and assist its nations to overcome crises. Egyptian efforts are sustained in this connection through the consolidation of its relations with African countries in political, economic, cultural and social spheres, towards a better future for the whole continent.
Egypt and African Issues
The Egyptian role in reinforcing the issue of African security can be summed up as follows
Support the African Dispute Prevention Mechanism, as an advanced step towards the preservation of collective security of Africa.
Support political solutions to crises in African regions, work for averting threats to peace and security in Africa and assert the principle of non- intervention in internal affairs and respect for boundaries and territorial integrity of states.
