Mubarak receives messages from Russian, Cypriot, African leaders

Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Maher submits today a report to President Hosni Mubarak on the outcome of his tour to Russia, Cyprus, Lebanon, Greece and Ethiopia.
Following his return home Friday from Addis Ababa, Maher said that he is carrying verbal messages to President Mubarak from the Presidents of Russia and Cyprus as well as African leaders he met on the sidelines of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) summit.
Maher met Friday with Seyoum Mesfin Ethiopian Foreign Affairs Minister, their second during the 7th summit of the COMESA that concluded Thursday.
Maher spoke of continued political consultations between the two countries, adding that bilateral trade ties are improving.
Talks also addressed the issue of the two countries joint committee in light of the envisaged visit to Egypt by Seyoum, he said, adding that an agreement was reached to go on with the visit in the second half of October.
Maher said that he also discussed with his Ethiopian opposite number the issues of Somalia and Sudan.
Seyoum reiterated his country's backing to the unity of both Somalia and Sudan and that it can never back any separatist efforts in any of the two countries, Maher said.
Talks also took up opening the Ethiopian market for Egyptian companies.
Maher said he attended a breakfast with businessmen and heads of the participating delegations, adding that he discussed with the chairman of the Ethiopian chamber of commerce ways to upgrade bilateral trade ties.
He underlined the importance of the 7th summit of the COMESA, as reflected by the participation of 11 heads of state and government as well as a host of foreign ministers.
The summit was a chance for consultations on the African stance and the Egyptian-African relations which Maher praised as good.
Maher said that he sensed African appreciation for the role played by Egypt under President Hosni Mubarak.
