Sudan-Regional, Politics, 5/25/2002

The chairman of the Sudanese opposition al-Ummah ( nation) party has expressed optimism over the future of the political conditions in Sudan. he disclosed that the Arab League will appoint a special envoy concerning Sudan.

In a seminar organized by the Egyptian al-Ahram al-Arabi on current conditions in Sudan, attended by the chairman of the foreign relations committee at the Egyptian parliament Mustafa al-Faqih, al-Mahdi said that there is a promising situation in Sudan.

He said that all different Sudanese sides have agreed to end the war and incline towards democracy.

Concerning the debated peace initiatives, al-Mahdi said that IGAD's initiative has reached a deadlock while the joint Libyan- Egyptian initiative has not changed yet its 9 points since one year.

As for the American efforts in Sudan, al-Mahdi said that these efforts will not yield without Washington's influence.

He described the report of the US special envoy John Danforth concerning Sudan as flexible but he opposed the fact that this report raised the issue of self determination. Al-Mahdi explained that this matter of self-determination has become part of the agenda of many countries. He indicated that also the Arab League, by its turn, will appoint an envoy for Sudan.
