Morocco-Dominican Republic, Politics, 5/24/2002
President of the Dominican Republic Hipolito Mejia underscored on Wednesday similarities between Morocco and his country, especially their fight to achieve social, political and economic stability.
In a speech delivered during a dinner banquet hosted in his honor at the Ryad Palace in Rabat by King Mohammed VI, the head of the Dominican state said "We are following the same process aimed to make our peoples more democratic communities and each day more respectful of human rights." "The Dominican Republic admires and agrees with Morocco in the institutionalization of the state of law, in the decision to preserve human dignity, in the fight against poverty, unemployment and illiteracy."
President Mejia, who started on Wednesday an official visit to Morocco, also voiced will to renew old friendship with Morocco recalling "old friendly ties" with the late King Hassan II and "frequent entertaining conversations over topics of mutual interest, such as agriculture and the natural processes."
Citing similarities between the two countries, the Dominican President said the two countries share the same concern over "agriculture growth with sustainable development, the development of tourism and the decision to encourage the production of handicrafts, the search for a solution to the energy problem and the expansion of telecommunications." He also dwelt on fishing stressing that his country must take advantage of Moroccan lessons in the creation of a fishing industry capable of fulfilling national market growing needs.
He added that his government is "fully conscious that the essences of Islam are among other things civilizing and contain a profound message of peace," calling those "who have attempted to detract the cultural values of Islam due to the mistakes of a few outcasts" to "try to understand the essence of this philosophy" and "understand the deep content of tolerance, comprehension, compassion and love to the human being which feeds its principles."
President Mejia also pledged to make efforts to "make the Dominican Republic a bridge between Morocco and the Carribean."
