Arab League to follow up the Sudanese reconciliation issue

The secretary general of the Arab League (AL) Amr Moussa has stressed that the AL is continuing its efforts in dealing with the Sudanese issue with the aim of supporting peace opportunities and achieving national reconciliation in Sudan.

Moussa said following his meeting with al-Sadeq al-Mahdi, the chairman of the Ummah party and former prime minister that the Sudanese file is one of the main issues that are given special interest by the Arab League, noting in this regard the Arab Summit resolutions and its ministerial councils to this effect.

Replying to questions by journalists following his meeting with al-Mahdi, Moussa said that the two sides reviewed all efforts made by all regional and international sides to achieve national reconciliation in Sudan. Moussa continued that the meeting, in particular dealt with efforts pertinent to the Egyptian- Libyan initiative and IGAD's initiative, noting that the Egyptian- Libyan initiative got the support and backing of all Arab states, indicating the importance between the two initiatives.

Moussa continued that the meeting with al-Mahdi also dealt with the American position which was crystallized in the report made by the US special envoy John Danforth on the US vision towards boosting reconciliation efforts in Sudan.

The AL chief said that his meeting with al- Mahdi and his earlier meeting several days ago with the leaders of the Sudanese Democratic National Coalition Muhammad Othman al-Meirghani both fall in the course of the efforts made by the AL to achieve security and stability in Sudan, encouraging national reconciliation efforts. He added that the AL follows up closely conditions in Sudan, noting that there is a collective Arab responsibility for the AL efforts in this field.
