Baz expects an agreement on convening international conference next July
Egypt-Israel, Politics, 5/23/2002
Osama Al-Baz, the Political Advisor to the President said international community supports the convening of an international conference on peace for solving Middle East problem, indicating that if it was convened Syria, Palestine, Israel, Egypt, Jordan, the United States, Russia and European Union should attend the conference.
He said an agreement was expected to be reached to this effect in the upcoming six weeks.
In a joint seminar with the British ambassador in Cairo John Sawers sponsored by the American University in Cairo, Dr. Baz said the United States does not understand the degree to which the Palestinian problem is complicated saying European states much understand the situation in the Arab world due to geographical location.
He said security and peace are inseparable.
He said EU states should not be dealt with as a whole package as there are disagreements among the British, French and Spanish stances.
Baz said the problem now is that Israel should accept the existence of the Palestinian people besides them and should not think of deporting them and should not promote the idea of transfer to a neighbouring Arab country.
On his part, the British ambassador said Israel capitalizes on the US-led war against terror, adding Britain which shoulders the historical responsibility for this conflict is making daily consultations with the Palestinian and Israeli sides.
He said it was Britain that contributed to lifting the siege off Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat and Nativity church.
