Mubarak, Qaboos probe current Middle East situation
Egypt-Oman, Politics, 5/22/2002

In the framework of the sustained and intensive Arab contacts for confronting the current situation in the Middle East, President Mubarak and Sultan Qaboos Bin Said of Oman, during their summit talks in Sharm EL sheikh, called on international community to shoulder responsibility for correcting the current situation in the Middle East and forcing Israel to respect international legitimacy.

The two leaders underlined the importance of moving ahead through a common Arab vision in order to break the current deadlock in the Middle East.

They also expressed their full rejection of the Israeli government policies for maintaining siege, isolating Palestinian cities and giving no chance to the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) to take over its powers.

The two leaders discussed the international situation and reviewed progress of contacts with the United States, European Union, Russia, China and a number of Moslem countries.

They expressed their belief that any ideas to be raised for moving ahead should abide by all resolutions adopted by the Security Council, the General Assembly and commitment to the principle of land for peace.

The two leaders underlined the depth of relations linking the two states and the need for exerting every possible effort to develop them in the political, economic and technical fields.

They stressed the importance of making good preparation for the meeting of the joint Higher Egyptian Omani committee.

Talks between the two leaders opened in an expanded session following the arrival of Sultan Qaboos to Sharm EL Sheikh, which was attended by the two countries delegations.

Then the two leaders held a session during which they discussed the situation in the Middle East, the latest Arab developments, the results of Sharm EL Sheikh summit and resolutions adopted by the Arab summit in Beirut.
