Sanctions on Iraq condemned; US, British suspension of contracts continue
Iraq, Politics, 5/22/2002

British and US delegates at the "UN 661 Sanctions Committee" have suspended new 18 contracts which Iraq signed with companies under the oil-for-food and medicine deal.

Iraq said these contracts include digging appliances, agricultural tractors, fire-engines, cars, trucks, insecticides, medicines, medical requirements and spare parts.

INA reported today that these contracts have signed with Syrian, Saudi, Tunisian, Egyptian, Lebanese, Jordanian, Belgium, Swiss, Cypriot, French and Turkish companies.

Meantime, Former coordinator in the humanitarian program in Iraq Hans Von Sponek "decried Security Council resolution 1409 as a bureaucratic step which will not lead to improving the humanitarian situation in Iraq because it impose new restrictions on Iraq's economy." Mr. Sponek said that the long goods list deprives Iraq of treating its humanitarian situation, for example, he said: When Iraq needs pesticides, the Security Council will refuse this demand under the pretext that such materials have dual usage, INA reported.
