The implications of killing Jihad Jibril
Lebanon, Politics, 5/22/2002
The Lebanese dailies issued on Tuesday considered that the two assassination operations of Jihad Jibril and Ramzi Irani ( kidnapped ten days ago) in Beirut are a security break down which raises fears of the Lebanese people of an external decision to renew playing in the Lebanese field.
A commentary issued on Tuesday in the Lebanese daily Assafir by Joseph Samahah said that Lebanon on Monday lived a security crack and very worrying gaps have surfaced. He added that there are indicators which say that there is an intention to pressure Lebanon and Syria in Lebanon as part of a whole system to provide a cover for the later phase of the Israeli campaign against the Palestinians.
He explained that among these indicators are that the statement made by Sharon on Monday ( concerning Syria) and the series of laws enacted by the US Congress and the accusations to this effect.
For his part Chief Editor of Assafir Talal Salman said "What happened on Monday is but the Israeli war in Lebanon. Israel's choosing Beirut as a battle field was not randomly made. It is rather the decision to expand the cycle of war launched by Israel to cover all sources of dangers for Israel today, tomorrow or the day after tomorrow." Under the title "who shakes security in Beirut and why," the Lebanese daily al- Nahar indicated that fears and inquiries related the series of events that took place during the recent months aim at violating security in Lebanon, starting as from assassinating the former Lebanese minister and member of parliament Eli Hubeika, to kidnapping and then killing Ramzi Eirani and then assassinating Jihad Jibril.
For its part, the Lebanese daily al-Mustaqbal said that the two crimes which claimed the lives of Jibril and Eirani are not linked except by an attempt to destabilize stability and damage national security.
