Sharon conditions on Syria for conference; media campaign against Syria and Lebanon

At the time when the Israeli intelligence accused Syria and Iran of providing the Hizbullah party, recently, with huge amounts of weapons, the Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon has set 8 conditions in order to permit Syria's presence to attend a regional conference he had called for.

The Israeli prime minister noted on Monday morning in a meeting to the foreign committee and security of the Israeli Knesset his conditions to permit Syria to take part in the regional conference. Sharon's conditions are the following: expelling "11 terrorist organizations working on its territories;" alienating the Iranian revolutionary guards from Lebanon; Preventing the arrival of weapons to the Hizbullah party; implementing UN Security Council resolution no 426 provides for deploying the Lebanese army on the border with Israel; dismantling the infrastructure of the Hizbullah Party; eliminating the Syrian presence in Lebanon and giving information to Israel about the Israeli prisoners and missing.

Sharon's conditions raised strong protests in the lines of members of the committee's opposition. Ran Cohen of the Meritz Movement announced that with "such conditions there is no opportunity to convene a regional conference." Israel's opposition leader Yusi Sarid said to Sharon during this session "You are now trying to make a general reform in all the Middle East. Ariel Sharon is the greatest reformer. The reformer in Palestine, in Syria and in Saudi Arabia. Do you think ( addressing Sharon) you are doing your own way? If you do not start a fundamental political step very soon, terrorism will return back greater and you will return back to the ( Palestinian ) areas to reoccupy them, even in Gaza."
