US appreciates Egypt's role in settling disagreements with Libya

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak yesterday received Edward Walker, the head of the US Middle East Institute, who said following the meeting that he discussed with the President the situation in the Middle East in general and in the Palestinian territories in particular as well as the need for maintaining calm in the region and resumption of negotiations.
Walker said that President Mubarak is playing an effective role in reaching a solution to the current crisis, saying US officials highly appreciate efforts by President Mubarak.
Walker said that he would submit a report to President George Bush on the outcome of his talks with President Mubarak and the leaders of the region immediately upon his return to the US capital.
He described the situation as a tragic, saying the situation is ran contrary to our hopes, an Palestinian infrastructures were demolished instead of being built them.
He said he believes that there is no possibility for holding Palestinian elections in the light of the existence of the Israeli military machine in the PNA territories, hailing the step taken by President Arafat for restructuring the PNA, a step which he said will help establish the state on democratic basis in future.
He underlined the need for the Israeli withdrawal from Palestinian territories so that Palestinians may start those measures.
He said that the Libyan issue was discussed, telling President Mubarak that the United States was hopeful for settling US Libyan disagreements.
He said that the meeting also tackled the Iraqi issue and the new sanctions regime endorsed by the United Nations.
He said that his visit to Egypt comes in the framework of a tour that would take him to Qatar, Oman, the UAE Kuwait and Bahrain.
