Syria: some 5000 navigators threatened to be unemployed
Syria, Economics, 5/20/2002

The Syrian private al-Iqtisadeyah paper said that some 5000 Syrian navigators might become unemployed by the beginning of June if the Syrian authorities will not move quickly enough to avoid that.

This specialized economic weekly added that the reason to that is the "implementation of the rules of the international agreement on levels of training and offering certificates in the first of July, while most of the Syrian navigators do not carry eligible naval certificate; a matter which makes them violators to the law in their work."

The paper warned that having those navigators unemployed will stop the transfer of USD 5.1 million to Syria per month the navigators used to send home from their job sites to their families in Syria.
