Sudan ready to share oil with its south, not with the rebels
Sudan, Politics, 5/20/2002

The Sudanese government on Sunday announced its readiness to share oil revenues with the south but not with the rebels, as proposed by the US special envoy John Danforth.

The Sudanese deputy foreign minister Mutarraf Sadiq said that the government is ready to have food reach the vulnerable people via river and land passages. He accused the rebels of violating the cease fire and civilian protection agreement in Jibal al-Nouba, noting that the Sudanese government will launch a complain to the US in this regard.

Meantime, the Sudanese government on Saturday approved a proposal to cease- fire with the southern rebel movement in one of the main oil areas in al-Wahda and Baher al-Gazelle, proposed, according to the Sudanese government, by UN organizations and non- governmental organization.

Dio Matick, the assistant for the Sudanese president advisor for peace affairs Ghazi Salah Eddine Atabani announced this consent in a press conference. He did not clarify the date of reinforcing the cease fire which aims, according to Matick, "to allow the reaching of humanitarian aids to these areas and establish confidence between the two conflicting sides," the government and the people's liberation army ( south rebellion," led by John Garang.

Sudan is producing 205,000 oil barrels every day of which 145,000 are for exports. In al-Wahda and Baher al-Gazelle there are several Canadian and Chinese private companies.
