Egypt dismisses reports about Mubarak's threats to Israel
Egypt-Israel, Politics, 5/18/2002
Egypt's Charg d'Affaires in Israel, Ihab el-Sherif yesterday dismissed reports by the British newspaper Foreign Report about a telephone call between President Hosni Mubarak and Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon.
The British paper said the phone call came in the wake of Israel's threats to invade the densely populated Gaza Strip, and claimed that Mubarak warned the hardline premier that Egypt would send tanks into Sinai if Israel carried out the planned military campaign in Gaza.
"I received instructions [from Cairo] to deliver a statement to the Israeli Prime Minister, since reports about the Israeli military plans started to spread.
The statement did not include any warning or threats, only recommendations," Sherif told the Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth.
The UK newspaper report was also dismissed by Danny Ailon, an advisor to the Israeli Cabinet.
He said that Mubarak had not telephoned Sharon, but sent him a cable stressing the importance of maintaining stability in the region.
