Jordanian human rights society calls for releasing Toujan al-Faisal
Jordan, Politics, 5/18/2002
The Jordanian society in defense of human rights has called on the Jordanian King Abdullah II to pardon the former member of Parliament in Jordan Toujan al-Faisal who was sentenced on Thursday for 18 months imprisonment.
In a statement, the society called on Friday the Jordanian King not to ratify "the sentence on the care of preserving human rights in Jordan and for maintaining Jordan's reputation abroad."
The Jordanian state security court sentenced Toujan faisal- the first Jordanian woman to join the parliament for one and a half years imprisonment for charges of defaming the country. However, sentences released by this military court can not be appealed, but the constitution gives the King the right to alleviate the released sentences or issue a pardoning.
