Arafat: no elections before the end of the occupation

The chairman of the Palestinian Authority Yasser Arafat said on Friday that he will not make general elections until the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories will be eliminated.
Arafat told journalists he will hold general elections -- when the Israeli occupation ends which according to signed agreements was supposed to be by the beginning of 1999.
Meantime, the chairman of the Palestinian Legislative Council Ahmad Qrei said that the Palestinian municipal elections will be organized before the end of the current month while the legislative elections will be by the beginning of next year.
Qrei explained that Arafat received positively the proposal made by the Legislative Council to this effect, but without indicating to the elections of the Palestinian Authority Presidency.
