Austria praises Mubarak's role
Egypt-Austria, Politics, 5/17/2002

Austrian Foreign Minister Benita-Maria Ferrero Waldnder praised the pivotal role played by Egypt and President Mubarak from the beginning of the peace march till now.

In remarks to Al-Ahram Waldner asserted that the Sharm El-Sheikh summit that comprised President Mubarak, President Al Assad, and Crown Prince Abdullah was a positive and serious attempt to pave the road to restart negotiations.

The Austrian Foreign Minister praised the final communique of the summit that reflected the ideas of three peace-advocate Arab states. She added that these ideas have got the support and appreciation of the European Union, the USA, Russia and the United Nations.

On the voting of Israeli Likud that rejected the establishment of a Palestinian State, the minister expressed her deep disappointment, and termed this voting as a slap to the peace process.

She added that Austria and the EU will continue their efforts to reach a political solution to bring peace to this region, which represents an economic significance to Europe.

Peace, she said, will not be realised, except by the creation of a Palestinian State, and the implementation of UNSC resolutions 242, 338, 1042, and other resolutions of international legitimacy.

The minister also said that the EU has no evidence that the Palestinian Authority has misused the funds of the European aid, as claimed by Israel.
