Solana: Palestinian elections this year; Larsen: The UN might replace the Palestinian Authority
Palestine, Politics, 5/17/2002

The UN special envoy to the Middle East Terry Rod Larsen on Wednesday in Oslo noted the possibility that the UN might replace the Palestinian Authority in case security will not be established in the region.

Rod Larsen announced during an intervention he made at Nobel Institute in Oslo that: If work of the police in the Palestinian Authority will stumble, we have to fill the vacuum, and the UN will be most expectedly be the best one who can do that. He continued that " if things continue to deteriorate, something should be done," noting that the Palestinian Authority should implement a reform plan.

On the other hand, the higher representative for the foreign policy at the European Union Javier Solana said on Wednesday that the Palestinian President Yasser Arafat "intends to organize parliamentary and municipality elections by the end of this Summer or the beginning of Autumn." Solana added before the European Parliamentarians who held a general session in Strasbourg that Arafat "had informed me he intends to make these elections as soon as possible, which means late Summer or early winter this year."

Solana said that the parliamentary elections for renewing the Palestinian Legislative Council which has completed its term of office by now will precede the municipal elections.

Solana considered "If we will be able to make these change to the Palestinian Legislative Council and the municipal council within appropriate time, we will give a new impetus for the democratic life and for the Palestinian establishments."
