Maher meets with Swiss envoy to horn of Africa, Sudan
Egypt-Sudan, Politics, 5/16/2002

Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Maher Tuesday met with Joseph Boucher, Swiss special envoy to the Horn of African and Sudan.

Emerging from the meeting, the Swiss official said his talks with Maher focused on the Sudanese question and the Egyptian-Libyan and Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD)'s initiatives on Sudan and the role of the international community.

Boucher said negotiations were held last January in Switzerland on a ceasefire in the Nubia mountains region, adding that the negotiations were the first to ceasefire in Sudan under international supervision.

Boucher said he presided over the negotiations at the request of the Sudanese and Americans.

He said he posted Maher on the outcome of those negotiations and discussed with him the current situation and prospects of future developments in the region.

I have also discussed with Maher the role Switzerland can play in the future within the efforts aimed at solving the Sudanese problem, he said, adding he reviewed with Maher some ideas in this respect.

The Swiss envoy further underscored the importance of role played by Egypt, the United States and Kenya, adding that Switzerland was trying to facilitate coordination among the parties concerned.

He pointed out that his country had no ambitions in Sudan, neither was it in conflict with any party.

This is what makes Switzerland an ideal partner in the endeavours to settle the conflict in Sudan, he added.
