Quebec wants to enhance exchanges with Morocco
Morocco-Canada, Economics, 5/16/2002

Quebec vice-prime minister, who is also state minister of economy and finance, Ms. Pauline Marois, met in Rabat Wednesday Moroccan prime minister, Abderrahmane Youssoufi.

Youssoufi lauded the level of cooperation between the two countries, particularly in the fields of professional training, social security and public administration modernization, and called the participants in the industrialized countries meeting, to be held in Canada next month, to take concrete initiatives in favor of African development, the prime minister's office said.

Ms. Pauline Marois voiced her country's readiness to share its expertise in the field of free trade zone development, through trade fostering between the private sector and banks in both Morocco and Quebec.

She also called for a framework agreement to develop bilateral agreement.

Marois had met earlier on Wednesday minister in charge of territory planning, urbanism, housing and environment, Mohammed El Yazghi.

El Yazghi called for fostering partnership between the two countries' enterprises, and voiced Morocco's desire to benefit from Canada's "rich experience" in the field of territory planning.

On Tuesday she said her country "wants to enhance economic and commercial exchanges with Morocco," to bring them up to the confidence and friendship ties binding Morocco and the Canadian French-speaking province of Quebec.

The minister, who heads a business delegation to Morocco, said Morocco can be "a gate for Quebec enterprises to the European Market, like Quebec can be Morocco's gate to American markets."

"We both aim to vary our commercial relations, and possibilities of setting up strategic partnerships is very interesting," she added.

The minister stressed the importance of the Quebec-settled Moroccan community as the "best of bridges between the two countries."

She also hailed the bilateral cooperation in the field of professional and university training, environment, culture, public administration modernization, and governance systems.

Pauline Marois and her delegation had arrived in Morocco Monday for a four-day visit.
