A mechanism to develop inter- Arab trade discussed
Regional, Economics, 5/16/2002

Works of the preparatory meeting to establish a mechanism to develop inter-Arab trade have started at the headquarters of the general secretariat of the economic unity council at the Arab League.

The secretary general of the council Ahmad Jweili said in statements following the deliberations of the meeting that this mechanism aims at reactivating the role played by commissions involved with inter-Arab economic development in general and in particular interested with trade activity, in order to reactivate inter- Arab trade and increase the volume of Arab exports to the international markets in a balanced and integrated way with the Arab efforts to liberalize inter- Arab trade.

He explained that the work to attain this mechanism is based on supporting the role of commodity and service trade, bringing together regional commissions concerned which include exporters and importers in support of economic interests and orienting information technology and economic performance.

This mechanism is composed of a consultation committee working for monitoring and following up Arab economic performance especially in the trade field. It includes Arab businessmen and investors, the general federation of the Arab chambers of commerce, industry and agriculture, the qualitative and specialized Arab federations, the Islamic Bank for development and the Arab Monetary Fund.
