Exiled Palestinians will stay in Cyprus until Monday
Palestine, Politics, 5/16/2002

The 13 exiled Palestinians spent their 6th day in Cyprus on Wednesday, waiting for the decision of the EU ambassadors who met on Wednesday in Brussels, but no decision was taken to this effect as the ambassadors could not find a solution to define the status the exiled persons will have during their existence in the hosting states.

The ambassadors agreed to convene another meeting for them today, while the spokesman for the Cypriot presidency in Nicosia Mikhalis Papa Petro said "it is more expectedly a solution will be reached by the end of this week." The Italian prime minister Silvio Broleskoni announced on Wednesday, on the sideline of the meeting of NATO foreign ministers at Iceland's capital Rekavik that Rome gave the Palestinians a provisional stay on the ground that they are refugees but without giving them the right of "asylum."

Meantime, the Palestinian authority representative in Cyprus Samir Abu Ghazala denied any American intention to claim against any of the exiled under the charge of killing an Israeli settler having an American nationality in January at Jeilo settlement in the West Bank. Abu Ghazala said that the US is coordinating with the European union the situation of the exiled Palestinian in the countries where they will be hosted.
