UN Security Council makes change to the sanctions imposed on Iraq
Iraq, Politics, 5/15/2002
The UN Security Council on Tuesday adopted a decision that provides for alleviating a part of the sanctions imposed on Iraq since 1990.
The resolution number 1409 was unanimously adopted by the UN Security Council 15 member states.
The long and complex resolution establishes a system that continues to impose the sanctions, but it alleviates measures which allow Iraq to import of certain products used by people for consumption such as food and medicine. The new sanctions, in practical terms, keep the same previous restrictions on commercial and industrial products needed by Iraq for its development. These new sanctions still allow the US and Britain -- the two main antagonists against Iraq -- to continue to be able to prevent the importation of commercial and industrial products needed for Iraq's development, as the USA and Britain have done previously under the old sanctions regime with the pretext that such commercial and industrial products have potential to be used for military purposes. These products range from trucks to fiber optics to computers. The 300- page list includes the products which continue to be subjected to inspection and being obstructed from entering Iraq.
However, importing these products outside the list continues to be stipulated by notifying the UN program on that.
Noteworthy, that US and Britain continue to make verbal threats against Iraq and speak of intention to change the government and even attack the country. The also announced of active efforts to that end. The US and Britain have also devided Iraq into three regions, in which they aim to maintain a form of military control over the north and south of Iraq.
