The US and Sudan
Sudan-USA, Politics, 5/15/2002
The US special delegate to Sudan has urged the US to move as "an incentive factor" for peace in Sudan, calling, simultaneously for strengthening diplomatic relations with Khartoum and for more humanitarian efforts there.
In a report he submitted to the US President George Bush following two visits he made to Sudan, the US delegate John Danforth said that it is a very ripe time to have a settlement between the Sudanese government and the rebels.
Danforth who was in charge of the Sudanese file in September indicated that the US is working together with Egypt and Kenya in order to prepare peace proposals. He said that effective participation to achieve durable and comprehensive peace requires, at least, strengthening the American diplomatic presence in Sudan. He called for the need of increasing humanitarian aid in north Sudan, the same as it is in its south.
In April, the Sudanese foreign minister Mustafa Ismael announced his country's intensification of diplomatic relations with the US but this matter was not then confirmed by Washington.
