Toujan al-Faisal faces the court without lawyers
Jordan, Politics, 5/14/2002
The attorney general of the Jordanian state security court on Monday called for condemning former member of parliament Toujan al-Faisal over the accusations addressed against her, relating in particular to "undermining the sovereignty of the state."
Al-Faisal, is facing four charges that carry total punishment -- as stated in the law -- that ranges between 6 months to three years of imprisonment, according to a legal source. The Attorney General Col. Muhannad Hijazin said in his arguments that Toujan al-Faisal "had used media forum which is at odd with Jordan as means for her to get free from all legalized controls and constraints" and is "publishing provocation under the pretext of objective criticism and serving the public interests."
The trial session was held in the absence of Toujan's lawyers who decided to withdraw from the case in protest of the court's rejection to summon the prime minister Ali Abu al-Ragheb to give his testimony.
Meantime, Toujan al-Faisal was quoted as persisting in her demand to summon Ali Abu al-Ragheb before the court, regardless to the results and how long the period of her trial will be.
Meanwhile the defendant's lawyer Zayed al-Radeydah said he will not attend the trial session and sill persists on his position in maintaining pullout from the case.
