UN Security Council postpones voting sanctions against Iraq for the fourth time on Monday
Iraq, Politics, 5/14/2002
The UN Security Council on Monday postponed a resolution amending the sanctions law imposed on Iraq since 12 years. This was at the request of Syria's representative to the UN Security Council in order to make consultations with his government.
Syria, a member of the UN Security Council, proposed certain amendments to this sanctions law. Amendments which have been so far rejected. This resolution can be adopted without Syria which does not have the veto rights like the US, Russia, Britain and France and China, but Washington prefers the result of the voting to be unanimous at the consent of the UN Security Council 15 member states with no objection. Diplomats said that the draft resolution will be adopted today ( Tuesday).
The draft resolutions which were proposed by the permanent members at the UN Security Council (the US, China, France, Britain and Russia) includes a products list to prevent Baghdad from importing equipment that can be used for military purposes. According to the sanctions imposed on it since its invasion of Kuwait, Iraq is banned from importing all types of military equipment. This amendment will be reinforced on May 30th with the end of the six-month period of the currently enacted "oil for food program."
