Syria might prevent an opposition Iraqi paper
Syria-Iraq, Politics, 5/13/2002
Well-informed sources in Damascus said on Sunday that there might be a new decision that provides for banning the printing and circulation of one of the Iraqi opposition papers in the Syrian capital Damascus and that is for many reasons including the protest filed by certain Arab states to the criticism made by the paper against their leaders.
Despite the fact that a decision is not yet announced to this effect, however, the last issue of the "al-Itijah al-Akhar" ( the other direction) issued by the chairman of the Iraqi al-Watan party Mashaan Jabbouri delayed two days from the set time because the permission to that was not given.
Al-Itijah al-Akhar prints in Beirut almost 12,000 copies which are circulated in Damascus.
The said paper -- which was strongly established in the Syrian street because of telling the story of arresting a spy for Israel in Syria -- recently published articles for Wafiq al-Samarrai' on the possibility of settling millions of Palestinians in Iraq.
The Syrian authorities then, considered the article as basically a reflection of an Israeli thought which is in contradiction to the Syrian view point in this regard. However, the sources ruled out that this article was the main reason behind the delay in the paper's circulation.
