Syrian efforts at the UN in support of Iraq
Syria-Iraq, Politics, 5/13/2002

Well-informed Syrian sources told the London- based al-Hayat daily in its Sunday's issue that Syria is working through its representative at the UN Michael Wahba to postpone approving the new sanctions system on Iraq, through the attempt to add elements obstructing the intention of the US to striking this country.

The sources added that Damascus seeks to invest its presence at the UN security council to the effect supporting the Iraqi position at the UN.

The Syrian sources criticized the double standard policy adopted between accelerating approval of any resolution against Iraq and delaying the approval or implementation of UN resolutions relating to the Arab- Israeli conflict.

Diplomatic sources announced in Washington on Saturday that the voting expected today ( Monday) on the plan to amend the sanctions imposed on Iraq might be postponed because of a Syrian request to introduce amendments to it.
