Jordanian king calls for active US participation to reach peace in ME
Jordan-Regional, Politics, 5/11/2002
The Jordanian King Abdullah II called on the UN to interfere actively in order to achieve peace in the Middle East; peace that can solve fundamental problems instead of resorting to the step-by-step policy concerning the Palestinian issue.
In a speech he delivered on Thursday at Rice University in Houston-Texas, the Jordanian King said that the slow negotiations process between the Israelis and the Palestinians, in which certain sides in it build gradual confidence, have not so far attained certain results.
The Jordanian King indicated that the recent escalation in the conflict between the Palestinians and the Israelis made the fundamental issue clearer despite the widening differences between them. A matter which requires an important diplomatic effort from the international society to narrow these differences.
He stressed the need of informing the Israelis that they would not have a prize for their occupation and that any agreement between the two sides should be within a detailed timetable framework to implement it.
He added that the Arab leaders gave a strong base for such an agreement in their summit in Beirut in March through their approval of the Arab peace initiative which is based on the land for peace principle and withdrawal to June 4, 1967 border line as well as the establishment of the Palestinian state.
