Bahrain elections: women need to build on their newly gained rights
Bahrain, Politics, 5/11/2002
Results of the municipal elections in Bahrain on Friday showed women's failure to win any of the seats in the first municipal elections in the Kingdom since 32 years.
In a press conference he held on Friday in al-Manama, Bahrain's minister of Justice Sheikh Abdullah Bin Khaled al-Khaleifa said that men candidates to the elections won 30 of the 50 seats which fell under the competition and the result for the other left 20 seats will be settled after a second round of the elections which will be held on May 16.
Worthy mentioning that 306 candidates including 30 women competed in the competition in Bahrain where women received equal rights in political participation due to the recent political reforms promoted by King Hamad Bin Issa al-Khaleifa.
This new experience for women was described by one person as a great step forward and it indicates that women will need to develop the needed political skills and organizations; as women demand nothing more than "equal treatment and opportunity under the law" and to fail or succeed based on their abilities.
