The first issue of reviving civil society magazine
Syria, Politics, 5/10/2002
The committees in charge of reviving the "civil society" have published the 80- page first issue of its magazine which bears the title "al-Muwaten" (the citizen).
al-Muwaten is the second among similar unlicensed publications at that level, as the defense committees for the Syrian human rights had earlier issued its seasonal magazine under the name "Ammarji."
Syrian writer Michael Kilo explained the role played by the magazine in the relation with the society under the tile "Citizen's bulletin, for what?" considering it a means to conveying the "views and opinions, stances and necessary expertise for his return ( the society) to the public service and its direct activities as a relatively independent entity from the existing political representation."
The magazine had several reports about "civil society" and two news reports; the first was about a message addressed to the President of the Republic hoping to close the file of political detention and the second is about "the days of Palestine in Damascus." A report which depicts aspects of the reaction of the civil society in Syria to the Israeli destruction war inside Palestine.
Identifying the "civil society revival committees," the magazine said "they are independent civilian commission, described as "non political committees only in the limit where politics and culture cross, in being two cohesive trends in the social domain."
