Parliamentarian of Syrian origin provokes party crisis in Germany
Regional-Germany, Politics, 5/10/2002
German Parliament member of Syrian origin Jamal Qarisli has made a break in the party relations in the parliament of Dosoldove city, because of his resignation from The Green party, in protest of the policy pursued by the German foreign minister Yushka Fischer towards Israel, and he joined the Liberals party, as his new membership is faced by strong rejection of the "Jewish Lobby," inside that party.
Qarisli gave his resignation from The Green party almost one week ago, in protest of Fischer's policy ( who affiliates to the same party). Qarisli reminded minister Fischer that what is taking place in Jenin camp is much worse than what is taking place in Bosnia, and despite that "the leadership of this party has not moved to defend an unarmed people who are exposed to annihilation while it persistently called for halting what had taken place in other parts of the world of acts of annihilations against peoples."
In a statement, Qarisli said "I can not betray the Arab and German voters who elected me to the parliamentary seat. And I can not explain to them why the German foreign minister Yushka Fischer, who is from the Green party, stood against the position taken by the European parliament which called for imposing sanctions on Israel." Qarisli announced that he had joined the bloc of the "Liberal Free Democratic Party," in support of the stances of the deputy chairman of this party Juergen Moellemann, who supports the Arabs. A matter which increased the number of parliamentarians of this party, inside Dosoldove parliament, but he at the same time raised the regret of parliamentarians who support Israel in the "Liberals party" and in other parliamentary party blocs, and consequently ambarrased Mollman, who started to be accused of anti- Semitism and right extremism.
Moellemann who presides over the Arab- German friendship society and strongly defends the Arab causes, has been exposed to a defaming campaign launched by the Jewish lobby against him.
In challenge of this confused situation, the leadership of the Liberals party will meet this week with one issue on its meeting's agenda: accepting or refusing the membership of parliamentarian Jamal Qarisli. This implies in itself, necessarily, strengthening or weakening Moellemann inside that party, which is considered one of the oldest and most active German parties.
