Syria, Politics, 5/9/2002
Trial of the economist researcher and the spokesman for civil society defense committees Aref Salila and the founder of the "Dialogue Forum" in Tartous Habib Saleh starts today (Thursday) at the state security court, just few days after the beginning of trial for lawyer Riyadh al-Turk.
Lawyers concerned said that today's session is an ordinary interrogation session especially after the court's commission has realized what had happened in the trial of Riyadh al-Turk and informed beforehand, the two accused men Saleh and Dalila of the accusation according to which cases were raised against them.
Theseaccusations range from "undermining the sovereignty of the state," and "violating the constitution" to "provoking sectarianism." Next week a session will start for trying each of the spokesman for al-Atasi forum lawyer Habib Issa and member of the national dialogue forum and the civil society committees lawyer Walid al-Bunni.
