Banks and individuals demand Fleifal of $ 64 million
Bahrain, Local, 5/9/2002

An official source at Bahrain's Monetary establishment "the Central Bank" said that the volume of debts -- on the fleeing military colonel Adel Fleifal -- from several banks working in Bahrain reached 12 million Bahraini dinars ( USD 31 million), according to the Bahraini Gulf news daily in its Wednesday's issue.

The source told the paper, that according to available information these debts are covered by guarantees given by Fleifal to these banks without making sure that these will cover the actual value of the debts which were taken from the banks in the forms of loans.

The paper quoted lawyer Abdullah Hashem as saying that he is currently working to prepare papers of several financial cases, several citizens intend to file against colonel Fleifel, stressing that the volume of financial demands of many individuals against the accused ( Fleifel) are not less than 12 million Bahraini dinars. A matter which raises the volume of his debts to 24 million dinars ( USD 64 million). The paper also quoted a high ranking official at the ministry of the interior that Col. Fleifel used a forged passport in fleeing from Bahrain last Friday.

The official told the paper that Fleifel was expected to have passed the Gate by using his security card and then he was given facilitation to get into the board of the plane, stressing that he ( Fleifel) did not pass through the migration and passports offices at the airport.

On May 4, an official source at the ministry of the interior announced the col. Fleifel who is wanted for investigations in financial demands given by several Bahraini people, has left the country last Friday.

Col. Fleifel was working as an officer in the "political police" special department at the ministry of the interior since 1980s. He has been accused by the opposition and the political activists, of violating human rights and using his post illegally to have money.

Seven political societies asked the government to work for returning Fleifel back and bring him before the court in Bahrain "over the crimes he had committed against the people," according to a statement issued by these societies on Monday.
