Egypt-Austria, Politics, 5/9/2002
In an interview to Al-Ahram daily, Austria's defence Minister Herbert Schibner, tackled several items regarding the current developments in the Middle East.
About the serious critical situation in the region the minister said that his government rejects any kind of violence especially that to which civilians are exposed.
He affirmed that Austria urged Israel to pull out from the Palestinian self-rule areas, adding that the Middle East issue cannot be solved by military force, but through negotiations that should be resumed without pre-dictated conditions.
In response to a query on the Egyptian-Austrian relations, he stated that those links are continually developing in a distinguished form.
The Austrian minister recalled a highly successful visit to Egypt last year, which was performed in a very friendly atmosphere.
As for the economic ties, he stressed the fact that they are going ahead in a very good way.
The minister mentioned that other links on the political and security levels indicate extremely positive cooperation between the two countries.
Asked how he assesses the Egyptian stance towards the M.E. problem, he said it is worth respect as it reflects wise rational vision.
He pointed out that Egypt plays a key role; holding fast to peaceful solutions despite that it suffered so much from the repercussions of that crisis.
He added that Egypt will certainly carry on its very significant role in the future as well.
