Arab colloquy on WTO recommends creation of an Arab arbitration center
Regional-Maghreb, Economics, 5/9/2002
A colloquy held in Rabat last week to probe relations between Maghreban states and the World Trade Organization recommended that Arab states set up an Arab arbitration center and to re-activate the work of local centers.
In its final report, the two-day colloquy urges the Arab states to promote union, partnership and the consolidation of the Arab Maghreb Union if the region is to adapt to the reality of globalization. Participants recommended the development of arbitration services at the Maghreban and Arab levels and improvement of economic competitiveness, with an appeal to businessmen and public and private financial institutions to use the services of Maghreban economic consultants for all internal and external contracts.
Mahgreban states ought to hold more specialized encounters in order to popularize the culture of arbitration and create within universities and higher education institutes specialized courses on international trade law and arbitration.
A Moroccan participant, chairman of the administrative board of the Rabat international mediation and arbitration center -operational since 2001- said the colloquy put a special emphasis on the need for Arab countries to constitute a lobby with a strong negotiation power within the WTO and to improve their international competitiveness.
