Saudis boycott American products and services
Saudi Arabia-Regional, Politics, 5/8/2002

Saudi traders working in foodstuffs said that their sales of American products decreased by 25% during recent times following the calls made to boycott the American commodities. A campaign which started to receive serious and positive response by the Saudi citizens.

The owner of one establishment which is specialized in selling sweets and biscuits byproducts told the Saudi daily al-Watan that his sales of American sweets have been notable decreased during the two past months, noting that he started to face pressures from his clients to halt his dealings with the American products in addition to receiving several inquiries from visitors of his shop who always ask about the nationality of the products he exhibits because they want to avoid buying the American production.

In the same context, a Belgian trade official disclosed that Saudi businessmen are making contacts to import Belgian commodities in order to replace the American commodities which started to receive turn off by local consumers.

Meantime, other reports said all American products are being effected "An agent for American luxury cars has had to offer huge and unprecedented discounts to encourage customers to buy what used to sell like hot cakes in the Gulf states." A report issued by the National Council for Arab-American Ties said that the boycott of American products would force US investors to pressure the White House into changing its approach to the region. The report, excerpts of which were published last month in the Nasserite Al-Arabi weekly newspaper, said that American businesses and giant corporations have significant interests in the Arab world. A boycott, however informal, would deal them a painful blow.
