King Mohammed hosts function for Arab, Islamic delegates to UNO
Morocco-Regional, Politics, 5/8/2002
Morocco's King Mohammed VI hosted on Monday at his residence in New York, where he is on a visit, a function in honor of Arab and Islamic delegates to the United Nations Organization.
The sovereign first greeted the ambassadors of Mali, Qatar and Sudan in their capacity as respective chairmen of the Islamic group at the UN, representative of the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) chairmanship and chairman of the Arab group at the world body.
Then, the sovereign held separate meetings with the permanent delegates of Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Tunisia and Kuwait.
The situation in the middle east and ongoing efforts to find a political solution to the present crisis topped the meetings between the sovereign, chairman of Al-Quds Committee, and the ambassadors of the OIC member states to the UNO.
The sovereign insisted on the need to grant to this issue a top priority in order to obtain the Israeli army's complete withdrawal from the Palestinian territories and create conditions conducive to the preparation of a peace conference, on which the USA, Arab states and major powers are currently working in coordination with the UN.
Morocco, said the king, will mobilize so that the conference works toward a complete and definitive agreement over all aspects of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The King went on that it is in this perspective that Morocco considers it necessary to conduct "substantial preparation work" at the level of foreign ministers in order to increase chances for convening a summit.
Representatives of OIC member countries applauded continued efforts by the sovereign to promote a peace process that takes into account the Palestinian people's legitimate aspirations, in accordance with all the UN related resolutions. They also underscored the importance of steps undertaken these last weeks by the Moroccan king with US officials and the UN secretary general, insisting on the particular attention that Washington grants to the sovereign's remarks and appraisal of the situation in the middle east.
