Indonesia steps up fertilizer cooperation with Tunisia and Qatar
Regional-Indonesia, Economics, 5/7/2002

The Indonesian government is exploring cooperation with Tunisia and Qatar in the development of a compound fertilizer industry, reports the Indonesian news agency Antara.

An executive at the Indonesian agriculture ministry, Ato Suprapto, said a compound fertilizer producing company between Indonesia and Tunisia will be built in Indonesia, while a similar plant between Indonesia and Qatar will be constructed in Qatar, he said. Ato said each of the compound fertilizer factories will need an investment of 50 million US dollars and will have a production capacity ranging between 400,000 and 600,000 tons/year. He added that decision to build a compound fertilizer in Qatar is due to gas prices which are cheaper in Qatar.

Antara says the agriculture ministry has asked the government to cut the natural gas prices.

He said the Indonesian state-owned fertilizer company PT Pusri will establish cooperation with Tunisia's Group Chimique in conducting a feasibility study of the project, for which Tunisia will send a team to Indonesia in May or June 2002.

The construction of the two compound fertilizer plants, he said, will bring the number of similar industrial establishments in Indonesia to three, with PT Petrokimia Gresik already operating producing Ponska with a capacity of 300,000 tons/year.
