Morocco supports any Arab and international action in favor of palestinians
Morocco-Regional, Politics, 5/7/2002
Moroccan minister of foreign affairs and cooperation, Mohamed Benaissa, said Morocco supports any Arab and international action in favor of the Palestinian people.
The Moroccan official who was interviewed by Emirates daily "Al Ittihad" recalled how Morocco was the first Arab state to abide by the resolutions adopted by Arab summits and that played a leading role in the safeguarding of Islamic holy sites in the Palestinian territories, through its action within the Al-Quds committee, chaired by King Mohammed VI.
After he deplored Israeli practices that foiled all opportunities of a peaceful settlement and the negative incidence that the latest developments will entail on the peace process, the head of the Moroccan diplomacy said all sides need a long truce to overcome consequences of the Israeli operations, adding the USA has the power to convince the two sides to return to the negotiations table.
To a question on signs of an Arab reconciliation, Benaissa noted that it is the first time in 12 years that there is some improvement in relations among Arab states, citing as evidence results of the Arab summit of Beirut last March.
Asked on Moroccan-Algerian relations, he stressed the need to achieve brotherhood between people and avoid any source of divergence between the Arab Maghreb states concerned by the Sahara issue, explaining that if reason prevails, it is possible to consolidate the Arab Maghreb Union construction within the respect of United Nations resolutions. Otherwise, he went on "the Sahara issue will affect relations among Maghreban countries."
He also mentioned the possibility of postponing the Arab Maghreb summit in view of the "present circumstances."
