Morocco urges UN Security Council continued fact-finding work on Jenin
Morocco-Palestine, Politics, 5/7/2002
Speaking at the UN security council, convened at the request of the Arab group following the UN secretary general's decision to dissolve the fact-finding mission that was to be sent to Palestinian occupied territories, Morocco's permanent delegate to the United Nations, Mohamed Bennouna said before the international conference, the security council should see to it that its resolutions are implemented.
After he renewed Morocco's denunciation of Israel's invasion of Palestinian territories, the Moroccan delegate said Israel's destruction of Palestinian infrastructure does not have any military justification and was only meant to destroy ten years of work by the Palestinian authority to prepare the advent of a Palestinian state. "By destroying schools and hospitals and burning archives, Israel is plunging an entire population into bitterness and despair," he deplored.
Regarding the massacres of Jenin, he said the whole world is traumatized by images of this humanitarian catastrophe that will forever remain in the memory of numerous Palestinian generations, stressing testimonies of international workers and human rights organizations have corroborated the serious crimes that were committed in this city of refugees while Israelis continue to deny all reports and put forward arguments of normal conduct of war operations.
The Moroccan diplomat also voiced support to the UN secretary general who while showing openness remained firm on the values that underlie the world body creation.
The UN fact-finding mission does not need Israel's authorization to go to Jenin the Moroccan diplomat said. A single state's refusal to cooperate cannot paralyze the whole world, he added urging for the continuation of the fact-finding work in Jenin.
