Kuwait: a trial for secretary general of al- Salafeyah movement
Kuwait, Politics, 5/7/2002
The secretary general of the al-Salafeyah movement in Kuwait Hakim al-Muteiri on Sunday denied accusations addressed to him by the attorney general before the criminal court that he rumored false news against the security authorities during times of war.
In April, the Kuwaiti ministry of the interior brought al- Muteiri before the attorney general after he had circulated a statement including accusations to the state's intelligence department that some of its members mistreated Islamic detainees and torturing them. The Ministry of the interior denied such things to have happened.
Al-Muteiri told the court in its first session on Sunday to consider this case that the accusation of the attorney general is not correct and what was issued in its statement concerning the al-Salafeyah movement ( Predestination Movement) was formulated on the ground of what was published in the local media, on reports for human rights committees and complaints that reached five members of the Kuwaiti Nation Council ( the Parliament) from citizens who were maltreated.
Al-Muteiri's lawyer, Nawaf Sari asked the court: "what war the attorney general means? Is it the war with Iraq?" Commenting that "the first deputy for the prime minister ( Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad) during the recent Beirut Arab summit shook hands with the Iraqi vice president ( Izzat Ibrahim al-Douri), which is evidence that the state of war no longer exists with Iraq."
The court, however, decided to convene its second session next week in order to listen to more witnesses and the statement defending al-Muteiri.
